Navigating on a budget
ONBOARD navigation devices are mostly found on pricey cars and installing one in your car would require a princely sum.
Fret not for can get some reliable digital navigation help on a budget.
Chong Lee Siong of Gophers Technologies(picture)said those on a budget would be better off with a PND(portable navigation device).
"PNDs are highly affordable and you can remove it from your car and take it along with you to guide you as you walk, "said Chong.
The added advantage of a PND is that it is easier to update as users can simply take the PND, plug it into a computer and download maps straight off the Internet, rather than loading map updates into other digital formats and plugging it into the car's onboard navigation devices.
"I highly recommend a PND that runs on community maps such as those supplied from Malsing or MalFree,"said Chong.
"Although community maps aren't 100 per cent accurate, they are suitable for day-to-day use and at times come with far more details than commercial maps.
If you are buying a PND, you should also look at the hardware and buy one from a reputable manufacturer who offers a manufacturer-backed warranty and after-sales support.
"Also buy a PND with a large screen as it will offer greater visibility, especially under direct sunlight," explained Chong.
The basic PND Gophers Technologies has to offer nopw is the RM498 Visi-O Lite which a five-inch screen powered by the Atlas V processor, and uses community maps from Malfree.
If you prefer commercial maps, the Visi-O comes with Powermaps at RM598.
